About Lois
Welcome! I’ve owned and run Earthereal of Yorkshire since 2008, and been teaching since 2009: my name is Lois Skilleter and I’m based near Ilkley, on the edge of the famous Moor and the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.
I am fully qualified, and insured to practise and teach all my therapies. I am registered with the GRCCT, I hold QTS through my four year B. Ed. (Hons) degree, having taught in schools for 18 years, and I hold a valid EFAW certificate and a DBS Enhanced Disclosure.
I love teaching, having taught in various capacities since the age of 15, and also sharing the magic of holistic therapies. I feel very lucky being able to combine both my interests in my work. I see teaching as a two way process and often learn from my students as well as the other way round! I am humbled and delighted to find many of my students returning to take more courses, and sending me their friends who wish to learn. From 2009 to 2019, I taught courses for two other providers, and am now an independent tutor, assisted by my amazing associate tutor, Liz, who is also a former school teacher turned holistic therapist.
From 18 years of Primary and Early Years teaching, I have worked my way through gemstone jewellery making to crystal healing, and from there, to Reiki, massage, aromatherapy, reflexology and the other therapies which I practise and teach. Way back in 2007, I became “hooked” as I discovered the gentle healing power of Reiki and studied to Master Practitioner Western style, before taking my Shinpiden (Master Teacher) course 2 years later in the Japanese style, which spoke to me in a completely different way, and that is the way I practise and teach Reiki. It is more than simply a healing modality, it is a spiritual path where the responsibility for progression is entirely in the student’s own hands, and the hands-on healing comes out of this work on the Self. I use the manuals of the International House of Reiki and I teach along their lines. Anyone who has studied a different style of Reiki and feels drawn to the Japanese style is most welcome to discuss study with me. In addition to the Reiki courses, I offer short, intensive Professional Practitioner Diploma courses in various modalities including several Holistic Massage Courses which, along with the longer Reflexology course, are suitable for beginners starting out on a therapy career or for experienced therapists to add to their repertoire. Postgraduate courses are available for students who already have a massage qualification: please see the page for further information and pre-requisites for each course, and request a prospectus if you would like further information and prices.
I also offer a distance learning course in Meditation Teaching which qualifies students with a Professional Diploma and equips them with the knowledge, confidence and resources to run meditation groups. This is because I feel it is too much to cover in a day but I want to keep it affordable rather than create a longer course, and the distance learning works well according to my graduates, especially as it aims to equip students with a resource bank they can use in their teaching.
My distance learning course in Crystal Therapy offers a comprehensive general background to the production and properties of crystals, and is suitable for therapists wishing to incorporate crystals into their practice. It is also a good basic course for students who wish to study crystal therapy in more detail on advanced courses.
(Please note, my courses are written to the National Occupational Standards for Massage etc but due to the prohibitive costs, they are private, not national, qualifications and while fully insurable, they do not carry “levels”.)
My students and clients are my first priority and I endeavour to offer a friendly, professional service so as to ensure a relaxing and enjoyable training or treatment experience. I believe strongly that we are our own best healers and that the therapist’s main role is to facilitate this self healing for their clients.

My interest in holistic therapies grew as I became aware of the increasing anxiety and stress levels experienced by people in their everyday lives. I was a mainstream secondary school teacher for over twenty years and in that time I saw a dramatic increase in the anxiety levels of students, particularly in their exam years. Researching and working through my own anxiety issues showed me the importance of maintaining a balance between the physical, mental and emotional aspects of our being.
